Skylanders Gets New Characters

New friends are a quick trip to the toy store away.

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure has been getting a lot of buzz from some interesting places. The game on its own is a pretty standard kid-focused adventure game (read our  review here), but what sets it apart from other things on the market is the set of action figures that can be scanned and placed into the game, and the official website. There were 32 figures available at the outset, and you can now add three more to the roster, if you can find them on shelves, that is.

Everquest II Turns 7 and Goes Free-To-Play

Play EQII for free next month.

The MMO landscape has been changing rapidly in recent years, influenced greatly by free-to-play games like Wizard 101 and Freerealms, as well as the crushing competition of World of Warcraft. In this volatile market many popular MMORPGs have gone free-to-play, with SOE’s DC Universe Online being the most recent game to make the switch. In December, you can add Everquest II to that list, as well.

Rumors of the Next Xbox Point to 2012?

The codename is "Loop". Or "Project Ten".

With Nintendo already putting their hat in for the next console race, it was only a matter of time for some official-sounding information about the next machine from Microsoft. Considering that the Xbox 360 is now six years old (two years older than the Xbox was before getting replaced), development of a new console has been a foregone conclusion. But today, two tidbits of slightly conflicting information have come out regarding the future of the Xbox console front.

XCOM Delayed to 2013

Take Two posts losses and announces a delay of a noteworthy game.

Last year, 2K Marin announced that they were working on a new version of the popular PC game, X-Com. This version, officially titled “XCOM”, is a re-imagining of the classic strategy game, and takes a page from Fallout 3, transforming the game into a FPS hybrid. The game was originally given a release date of March, 2012, but in an investor call yesterday, publisher Take-Two announced that the game has been delayed.

World of Warcraft Loses 2 Million Subscribers

Is the mega-popular MMO on the downslide?

The World of Warcraft has been that 800 (make that 8,000) pound gorilla in the MMORPG room for seven years now. It has become a worldwide phenomenon, slipping into the mainstream as easily as Pac-Man, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty. The game has a rabid fanbase, was featured in a wildly-popular episode of South Park, and became the inspiration for Felicia Day’s popular web series “The Guild”. WoW boasted over 12 million subscribers for the past few years, but it looks as if the massively successful MMO has finally peaked. This year has seen a noticeable decline in paid subscribers, to the tune of almost 2 million.

Dead Space 2 Review

It's going to take more than a Plasma Cutter and a prayer to get Isaac Clarke out of this one.

By all rights, Dead Space 2 shouldn’t exist. The first game was pushed out into a crowded holiday season rush with little marketing behind it, and the game was very slow to reach sales numbers that EA considered successful. The second game, Dead Space: Extraction, was released initially as a Wii exclusive and sold a paltry 9,000 units in its first week, and it didn’t get much better from there. In the high-stakes game of HD video game development, it would have been completely understandable for EA to put Dead Space on the shelf and never look back. But somehow, Visceral Games was allowed to take another stab (or is that slice?) at it, and I’m very glad that they did, because Dead Space 2 is not only a worthy successor to the first game, but it’s also one of my favorite games of 2011.

New Assassin's Creed Game Coming Next Year

The only sure things are death, taxes, and Assassin's Creed.

Since the release of the first game in 2007, Assassin’s Creed has gone on to become one of Ubisoft’s most successful game franchises ever. Assassin’s Creed II was released in 2009, and since then there has been a major release in the series every year. Don’t expect that to change in 2012, as a new game in the popular stealth-action series is due to be released about a year from now.

Would-Be Modern Warfare 3 Thief Apprehended

Even a loaded gun wasn't enough to get a customer to part with his copy.

Hot on the heels of our story about two shipments of Modern Warfare 3 getting hijacked comes another story of MW 3 theft, this one in Kansas. Thankfully, this one has a happier ending.

Mass Effect 3 Beta Leaks and Reveals Gameplay Details

Thanks to a slight hiccup, we get a window into the way you'll be able to play.

With the announcement of Mass Effect 3 getting online co-op multiplayer, it was only a matter of time before news of a beta would emerge, especially with EA’s huge push for beta tests as pre-order incentives. The modern age of beta tests are far different from the Wild West of the PC scene of the 90s and early 2000s, however, and when the Mass Effect 3 beta accidentally got leaked last week BioWare was quick to issue some damage control, reminding people that the version of the game leaked out is in a rough, unfinished state.

BurgerTime World Tour Review

Someone needs to call the health inspector, because this joint is selling some rancid burgers.

When it comes to updating classic arcade games, there’s a right way to go about it, and a wrong way. Last year, Namco showed us the right way to do a modern take on a classic game with the excellent Pac-Man Championship Edition DX. This year, we get to see the other side of the coin, thanks to Frozen Codebase’s release of BurgerTime World Tour. I’m not a picky eater by any means, but this is a burger that I’d send back to the kitchen.
