Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll Review

What happens when you add a little RPG to the Dynasty Warriors formula?

Trinity: Souls of Zill O’ll is exactly the kind of game that you would expect from the makers of the Dynasty Warriors franchise – no more, no less. It’s unfortunate that I can’t simply end my review right here because there isn’t much else to say about the game beyond that opening sentence. Unfortunately the powers that be at PixlBit have requested that I elaborate on exactly what that opening statement means, and while that may seem unreasonable I am nothing if not a good sport.

Mario Mania: A Super Mario Bros. Retrospective

Matt takes an in-depth look at each Mario game.

You don’t have to tell me that I am a year late. I already know that. Mario’s 25th Anniversary has already come and gone, and Nintendo’s other big franchise is celebrating its 25th this year: namely, the Legend of Zelda. Yet you already know that by now, so you are probably asking this question right now: “Matt, what the hell? Why are you doing a Mario retrospective when you could be writing about Zelda?”

Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension Review

You'll have to trust me: it's a much better game than its handheld counterpart.

At first blush, it's easy to see a bit of Ratchet & Clank in the latest Phineas and Ferb adventure, which is based around the most recent movie Across the 2nd Dimension. This is due in part to the past experience of developer High Impact Games, which is comprised of ex-Insomniac Games and ex-Naughty Dog members. Despite offering a taste of the beloved Sony series, the game stops short of completely aping it to provide a more family-friendly experience that captures the own charm of the Phineas and Ferb series. While it's not going to reach the Ratchet and Clank crowd, it's still a great game for the target demographic of the show.

With Great Difficulty

What happened to "Nintendo Hard?"

I broke two controllers while playing Mega Man II as a kid. Specifically, I broke two NES controllers playing Heat Man’s level in Mega Man II. Even more specifically, I broke two NES controllers while doing the “Hell Blocks” portion of Heat Man’s level in Mega Man II. That particular stage summed up perfectly what the words Nintendo Hard really meant to me. You needed patience, quickness and the ability to predict the future. It also didn’t hurt to have a couple of extra controllers lying around the house, you know, just in case.

Cladun x2 Review

A super-customizable retro RPG by NIS.

I’ve never been more impressed by a title screen. Picture this: it’s a peaceful, moonlit night in 8-bit land. The pixelated moonlight is reflecting off of a pixelated island. There’s a catchy Japanese song playing (the one used in the official trailer). This one scene tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the game. It shows that NIS really understands its core fans and has put a lot of effort into making the game exactly what they want it to be.

Why the Wii Has Poor Third Party Support

An editorial morphs into a staff-wide free-for-all discussion.

Nick: As I read through forums and websites, I often see complaints of Wii third party support. I think everyone forgets something pretty critical:

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Hands On Preview

Can a co-op based Ratchet and Clank game deliver? We take a spin on the online beta to find out.

I’ve been enjoying the Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One online beta since it was released to the public earlier this week. I have to admit that when I heard that that the next Ratchet and Clank game, a favorite series of mine, was going to be a co-op focused affair I was skeptical. It’s easy to see how the game mechanics would fit into a frantic multiplayer experience, but will that be enough to support an entire game?

PixlTalk Episode 39: Runaway Train

With the Nintendo 3DS Conference behind us, find out what the PixlTalk crew thinks of the 3DS and Nintendo's future in the coming generation.

Back this week, Nick, Chessa, Jason, and Nate are joined by Joaquim to talk about the latest developments over at the house of Mario. Given the recent news coming from the Nintendo 3DS Conference, the crew couldn't help but discuss the 3DS once again, though some discussion of Skyward Sword precedes, given its strong showing at the conference.

PB & Jason Issue 56: A Solution

This week's PB & Jason revolves around a real solution for Nintendo and its current market problems.

While there's a lengthy discussion of how I believe Nintendo can genuinely find an audience in today's video game marketplace, don't be fooled: PB & Jason has a lot more than that!
