A look at the decision to use a cartridge-based format on the Nintendo 64

As forever a fanatic of all things Nintendo 64, I’ve sometimes wondered what the system would have been like if it had used compact discs as opposed to cartridges. All too often, the system is labeled as a failure or a mistake, with the insistence of sticking to cartridges as the primary reason. It’s pretty easy to look back so far into the past with the knowledge of today and pick out bad ideas, but during the time, no company had such luxury. With the fourteenth anniversary of the North American Nintendo 64 launch just passing a couple days ago, let us take a step back to 1996 and get a feel for the perspective of the world’s most successful videogame company who lost their lead in the market simply by doing what they love.

Beyond Good & Evil to Be Re-Released in HD

Ubisoft's cult classic will be upgraded to 1080p and released on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

Earlier today, IGN announced that Ubisoft cult classic, Beyond Good & Evil was to be revived in HD. The title, created by Michel Ancel, was originally released in 2003 for the GameCube, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC.

1978. When I began a new game in Space Invaders Infinity Gene, my score ranking was 1978. Coincidence? Hardly. 1978 is the year Space Invaders, by Taito, originally made its way into arcades, bars, and any other locations that could store a classic arcade title. Space Invaders Infinity Gene is based upon the evolution of a genre first solidified in 1978, and any chance the opportunity presents itself, the game makes sure its player knows this.

Sega Officially Announces Super Monkey Ball 3DS

Creator and developer of the series, Toshiro Nagoshi, believes the 3DS is the perfect platform for the latest title.

Today, following Nintendo's Fall Press Summit, Sega has announced Super Monkey Ball for the 3DS. Due out in 2011 in all regions, the game will harness the power of the 3DS and its motion sensing capabilities to provide an unprecedented Monkey Ball experience.
