Machine Memories: Intellivision

Posted on 02/05/2023 at 07:39 AM | Filed Under Blogs

My uncle had an Intellivision back in the day.  I remember my cousin and I playing Frog Bog for what seems like hours back then.  Not sure why that entertained us so much, but that's kids for ya.  I have a PS2 Intellivision collection that's really good.

Machine Memories: AVCS

I never had a 2600 as a kid.  My first 'console' was an Apple ][+ PC and I was pretty happy with that.  Especially considering the games on it were more like the arcade counterparts than the ones on the 2600.  My first real game console was the Atari 5200 I got for Christmas one year.  That was a total surprise, I didn't even ask for it.

As a kid, I was unaware of the video game crash, too.  But that's probably why I got an Atari 5200 because my mom probably found it really cheap at the time.  All I knew was I was able to get a lot of cheap games for it.  On that Atari 50 collection, there's a video where one of the guys said most people were probably unaware of the crash either at the time, just people in the business knew about it.

My cousin had the football version of these Mattel games.  I think it's interesting they re-released these a few years ago.

Never heard of Monster Crown. I did give Pokemon Conquest a mention in the podcast.  It was funny seeing Japanese warlords paired up with cute Pokemon.  The game is basically Final Fantasy Tactics with Pokemon in it.

Machine Memories: Pong

My first memory of a Pong home console was when my dad built our first TV from ordering parts in a Heathkit catalog.  He put in a pong clone console in the back.  You would just turn the station to channel 3 and pull out the paddles from behind the TV and you could play.  I was so young, though, that I didn't realize that was a video game. I just thought it was something you could do on your TV when nothing else was on.

I've played that new physical Pong arcade game at D&B's.  I wonder how they get it to work? Magnets or something.  It's pretty neat.

I won't be doing 'blog a day' as I have plenty of stuff to keep me busy writing at GamerDad.com and whatnot.  But I'll at least have one more blog later this month with game review links, and I'll read everyone else's blogs and comment if I have something intelligent to say.

Blog-a-Day?

By the way, I started playing Fuga.  I'm a big fan of Tail Concerto and Solatorobo, so I had to check it out.  It's interesting, but a bit preachy on some things.

I liked the cartoony look of Bot Gaiden, but boy it sure is hard!

The only Disney Infinity figures I would've liked to have gotten were Sorcerer Mickey and Wreck-It Ralph, as those are some of my favorite Disney charactes.

RETROspective: Goemon's Mystical History

Posted on 01/29/2023 at 07:44 AM | Filed Under Blogs

One other thing about the real life Goemon myth is that he was known to throw coins to distract enemies.  They kept that idea in some of the games, too.

I rented Legend of the Mystical NInja once.  It's too bad we didn't get the SNES sequels.  Those were really good.  They added first person mech battles, even though this was feudal Japan!

I wish I could've played the N64 titles.  The first one came out when I was a poor college student and couldn't afford to get it.  And when the second one came out, I tried to find it in stores and could never find it.  I heard it was really rare.

I have the DVD set of the Goemon anime.  It's pretty silly and goofy.  I love it.  Did you know around that time they also did a Twinbee anime?  I don't think that was released in the US though.

That's interesting that the main Goemon creator went on to Good Feel.  They've made a lot of really good 2D platformers.  They should do another, it's been a while.

Yeah Konami kind of sucks right now, so I wouldn't trust them to make anything cool with Goemon for a long time, if ever.  Too bad.
