My 1980s Gaming: 1981

I was a teenager, so the memory is a little clearer for me but a lot of it is guessing. But like in the case of Wizardry that came out in '81, I know I played it in '84 because that's when the Apple IIc came out and my parents bought one. I mean, it could've been '85 but definitely not later. It's fun to try and figure out just when.

They were all amazing in that picture. That guy up front looked like he popped right out of the game.

Pac-Man was never a favorite with me but I liked it. Donkey Kong too. I remember getting into DK Jr. more, weirdly enough. I like climbing vines, I guess.

I totally ignored it until I went for the "one bullet" achievement. You had to shoot a lock at the very beginning with the one bullet. Then it was all grav gun and the brief moment you had to use rockets.

It's weird I put up with such a port of Pac-Man on Atari 2600 at the time. Thing is, it was always a thrill to see something close to the arcade version at home, even if it did flicker like crazy and the maze was totally different.

I played it on Xbox and then again with the extra chapters on Orange Box for Xbox 360. The other day I was looking for it again on Xbox One because the Orange Box is backward compatible. Unfortuneately I don't have my hard copy of the game anymore. I'll either borrow my friend's copy or buy it again digitally. Great game. Car controls were a bit wacko, but otherwise super great. Oh, I remember now. Last time I played I used the Grav Gun through the whole game for an achievement. It was surprisingly useful and fun in place of a projectile weapon. You still needed the rockets for a few enemies however.

Pac-Man was huge. I have the Pac-Man Fever album on my wall right now just to commemorate 80s gaming.

I'll check those articles out right now.

It always seems that when something big came out, I was playing something else, unless it was Halo. I really like RPGs too. Maybe it was that my friends were all into western shooters.

FFVIII's battle system sound interesting. I've got to try it one of these days.

I love it even though I've never finished it. Gets hard.

August 2019 Recap

I'm playing EDF 2025 on Xbox One with a friend right now and it runs smooth as silk. It only chugged once at the end of a battle with a gigantic walking robot. I'm working through a normal difficulty playthrough with the Ranger. Weapon limits really annoy me because I have a ton of high level weapons I farmed on Xbox 360.

I watched an extended trailer of the Mana Collection today at Gamestop - looks great and I want it.

So do I. I'm watching the sales for VC4 closely. I'll get that eventually.

I saw an anime the other day that had very similar graphics to VC. I forget the name though. I wonder if the artist on VC is working in anime right now. I love that hand-drawn, watercolor style.
