Well-written, Angelo. I have nothing to add and you have a bit of an idea what my take on things is, anyway.

I'm looking at the AC franchise as just a bunch of fun games. I'm not looking for realism in the story, just for fun gameplay and a decent story with characters that I can care about what happens to them.
Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!! Gee, thanks, Julian! Actually, I mean that. I really enjoyed the first chapter, big jump at the end. I think my heart rate may have returned to normal at this point. Looking forward to Chapter 2, but I'll have to wait until it becomes free.
Yuri from Shadowhearts, over the course of the two games he's in, his character goes from being kind of a crude, selfish jerk to being a hero, but without going all goody-two-shoes about it.
Like I said, one of my most memorable visual moments in a game was from the first AC game. If you can find it for wicked cheap, try it out. It's a gorgeous game, and it's worth exploring the environments and climbing the viewpoints. And I really do want to see where the story takes me. But the second one is so much better.
I think I may have gotten through the first two thirds of the game, but it was such a slog to get that far. I do want to finish it some day just for the story, though.
Like I said, I really wanted to like the first one, but it was the same three missions over and over and over again ad nauseum. But it was so very, very pretty!
Oh, I'm having fun with it all right! It has the right mix of elements for me: exploration (and being rewarded for exploring), a good, solid story, fun gameplay that is easily picked up, combat that isn't the main focus of the game, and it's so very, very pretty. Normally, I don't go all ga-ga over graphics in a game, but the AC games are so absolutely gorgeous.
I got stuck on one particular puzzle and rage quit. I'll have to get back to it, because I really liked it up until that point.
I've got the PS1 version, found it in near-complete condition used. My SO thought I was crazy to spend $40 on a used game for a previous gen system, but it just looked so cool! And I was hooked from the moment I put the first disc in. This was also the game that taught me to keep multiple save files, as I got myself stuck in the sewer after I defeated the sewer monster and didn't have enough healing items to make it back out. I ended up having to start the game over from the beginning.
