The Xbox 360 Sure is Nifty! Part One: Xbox LIVE Downloadables

32-bit Mega Man game... like Mega Man Legends 3, maybe? The Mega Man Legends games were the only Mega Man games I really, really enjoyed. I thought it was complete bullshit the way Capcom pulled the plug on MML3 and then blamed gamers for killing it.

Rad Racer Review

Posted on 12/15/2013 at 07:56 PM | Filed Under Review

This was a really impressive racer for the NES. Come to think of it, other than this and Rare's RC Pro-Am, I can't really think of any other good NES racing games.

Square has always been good at pushing the limits of the hardware it is making games for. They've made a few racing games since then, like Driving Emotion Type S, but they haven't really made an impact amongst the Ridge Racers, Gran Turismos, or Forzas of the modern gaming world. It's also kind of mind-blowing that Nobuo Uematsu did the music for this one. I got to meet Mr. Uematsu in person at Distant Worlds in Omaha this past March. I got a picture with him, conductor Arnie Roth, my wife, and myself, as well as having him autograph the front cover of my copy of Final Fantasy IX.

The Legend of Zelda Review

Posted on 12/15/2013 at 07:43 PM | Filed Under Review

The Legend of Zelda was my favorite game for quite awhile, surpassed only by A Link to the Past. However, in all honestly, it didn't really stand the test of time even in 1994, when I got a taste of A Link to the Past (a game which really does stand the test of time in today's environment), let alone here in 2013. Still a great game and a landmark in video game history, but mechanically, time has left it far behind.

The Xbox 360 Sure is Nifty! Part One: Xbox LIVE Downloadables

I liked some of the obscure Japanese titles that found their way to Xbox Live in the early years, before the PS3 really started coming into their own. I've been pretty much PS3 and Nintendo exclusive for the past 4 years and haven't had a Live Gold account since then, so I'm really out of the loop on Xbox. The Simpsons and Pac-Man Championship DX I bought from PSN, and I got Zen Pinball 2 for PS3 instead of Pinball FX 2.  I have the original TMNT arcade game which was never ported to PS3, but that game's been delisted anyway. I mostly liked stuff like Bangai-O, Radiant Silvergun, and Ikaruga that are extremely difficult to find anywhere else.

My Top 10 Gameboy Games

Posted on 12/15/2013 at 01:16 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I got the Game Boy for Christmas the year it came out, in 1989. I got the bundled Tetris as well as Super Mario Land.

My favorite Game Boy Games: Link's Awakening (although, I still far prefer A Link to the Past), Pokemon Red/Blue, Final Fantasy Adventure, and the Dragon Warrior I & II remake and Dragon Warrior III remake, and Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. Kid Icarus in particular was great and was far better than the NES game. I guess it's on the 3DS eShop. It'd be cool if Nintendo would do a full-color remake of it with SNES/GBA level graphics.

My Top 5 NES Games

Posted on 12/14/2013 at 04:01 AM | Filed Under Blogs

My favorite NES games were SMB3, the two Zelda games, Kid Icarus, Punch-Out!!, and Dragon (Quest) Warrior III. Oh, and Bionic Commando.

I'm actually with you on the NES. I enjoyed playing my best friend's NES a lot when I was in grade school. I started gaming on Atari machines, namely the 2600 and Atari's 8-bit home computers, and the NES was admittedly a big improvement over those. Even so, I still don't have a great deal of nostalgia for the NES other than the titles I named above. My nostalgia trips are generally taken on the original PlayStation, and the SNES to a somewhat lesser degree. Part of it is that I always had to play other people's NES games, having never owned one myself. The first console I actually owned was the SNES. But the fact is, even the best NES games were generally far exceeded in every way on the SNES and PS1. It's tough to play the original Zelda again once you've tasted A Link to the Past, likewise with Metroid versus Super Metroid.

So About Ni No Kuni...

Posted on 12/14/2013 at 03:53 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Loved Ni no Kuni, combat and all. It's been my favorite game released this year. I thought the 1UP review was kind of bullshit myself. The reason why it's so cheap is that it apparently sold well enough to be reissued as a Greatest Hits title, although I don't know what sales criteria is used for Greatest Hits on PS3. My guess would be 250,000 copies.

New PC, Heart Surgery, YOTS

Wow, GH, glad you went to your doctor and had that workup when you did, and spared yourself from permanent cardiac damage or worse. Glad to hear you're feeling better and good to see you here again.

Favorites of the Generation

Posted on 11/15/2013 at 08:08 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Fallout 3 was great, although I prefer New Vegas. I also liked Red Dead Redemption.

Far and away, however, my two favorite games this generation were Valkyria Chronicles and Ni no Kuni. No other games came close to either of them.
