Personal Picks for GOTY 2013

Posted on 01/17/2014 at 03:54 PM | Filed Under Feature

So the GOTY year list was quantitative, this was qualitative. Personally, I enjoy the more esoteric, but also more in-depth results you get from the latter.

I really wanted to get DuckTales Remastered when it was on Steam's Winter Sale, but I had already bought so much crap by then. I may just bite the bullet and buy it anyway. I've only played its original NES sequel on nintendo8.com, but it looks fun. Plus, I actually did watch the show, so I'd like to hear the voiceovers.

Blood Dragon looks so cool. I love 80s neon. The fact it focuses on entertainment like entertainment should makes it even more appealing.

I'm still not a mark for anything close to an RPG or RTS that has its complexity talked about ad nauseum, even if it is more accessible now. However, this is the first I've heard of the dialogue and characters, which are elements that have always interested me in RPGs, and made me wish they weren't turn-based or strategy games. Hey, Roy was my favorite character in Smash Bros.Maybe his story is good, too.

I haven't played Pokemon since Blue, and I'm amazed that it's stayed relevant so long, but X & Y sounds like another reason to maybe get a 3DS. I don't know what it is, but I tolerate RPGs made by Nintendo much more easily. Also sounds like they made Internet interaction a part of it, which that series was screaming for from the start.

Like Joaquim, I think Steamworld sounds dull at first glance, but maybe if I had a 3DS, it would win me over too.

Also, Rayman Legends is too expensive on Steam for me right now, but as a platforming enthusiast myself, I'm keeping an eye out. Guess I'll miss that gamepad stuff, though.

In closing ... you would, Chris. lol

The Maddening Stubbornness of Nintendo

I'd actually argue Majora's Mask took more risks as far as the 3D Zeldas, although I'm not as big a fan of that one. When I say more risks, I mean risks involved in the gameplay. Sailing might have been a bit tedious, but from my perspective, it wasn't near as mounumental a change in overall structure as seen in Majora's Mask's clock system and masks. The masks idea was cool. I wish they'd have left it at that.

As for Wii U, I think we agree from all that I know, which I know from watching from the sidelines.

I am glad DMC reboot is free.

It looked like something I might enjoy, honestly. Haven't played it, though. I'm fine with the dude being nude at the beginning, if they provide some context and there's a point, but I'm guessing there isn't.

All I know is the art style looked fine to me, and DMC 4 was boring as shit when I played it, so maybe I'd like the new one better. no idea, though.

Coming from a background in Production, you might rest easy knowing that simply being in the Hollywood system DOES NOT mean you make millions. Plenty of the work now is being done by contractors in Luoisiana (like my former PA position) and while the casting director probably lives comfortabl ... actually, I think the casting director may have also been Oprah.

Alright, never mind, I guess you're right. Actually, no. It's a guy named Billy Hopkins. Well, he sounds rich, so I guess you still could be right. Sad day for the rest of us.

It's not so much insane as it has some baffling casting choices in it. I enjoyed both how laughably bad and genuinely good parts of it were.

Same here on all fronts with Tomb Raider, just have yet to install on my laptop.

There were people laughing at a lot of the stuff behind me, and I didn't mind, and they didn't get thrown out. A lot of the movie was ... odd. I still liked it, though. It even got people to clap at the end.

Then again, it was a discount student theater screening in the Student Center, so maybe at a fancier place, you'd have gotten thrown out. Depends on the theater.

Yeah, I meant like the a in hate for long a, the a in hat for short. Maybe I got the two mixed up, though.

Arisia Convention This Weekend

Yeah, I do love having a job that ends at 5pm now. I honestly feel that I'm more efficient that way, anyway, cause I have a goal to work towards every day. Good luck!

I don't think I blogged about SGC 2013 until it was over, but I'd love to blog from a con, too. I think I tweeted during it, if that counts.

GTA V's Attitude Towards Authority

That, and the military are always thought to be protecting, where there is a history of media portrayals of corrupt cops. Like you said, we interact with soldiers less, and typically only when they're off duty, so they're not having to say "no" to civilians all the time. From working in Residence Life, I know how easily telling someone "no," even for their safety, puts you on their shit list.

Thanks for the suggestions, I might use them if I don't go with a couple other ideas.

Greenman: I gotcha.

GTA V's Attitude Towards Authority

Posted on 01/17/2014 at 01:41 AM | Filed Under Blogs

In general, the depiction of cops as either purely cannon fodder, like in GTA, or incompetent (most superhero media I'm privy to), has always been bothersome to me on some level.

That's not to say there aren't asshole cops or soldiers that arguably deserve their bad press (Nevada policeman kicking a man in diabetic shock in the head, presuming he must be drunk; Abu Ghraib photos), but I tend to think the good and awesome far outweighs the bad. Yet the fact I knew off the top of my head a couple bad examples from media, and had to go searching for good apples, says something about how public service members can be portrayed in media.

Well, moreso cops. I'd honestly tend to argue U.S. soldiers are fairly well-liked by the general public, especially when compared to cops, but that's simply my perception. Since I'm in a media research class, this topic might actually be helpful to me in coming up with some research ideas.

But I understand where you're coming from. While legitimate cases of corruption exist, I can certainly see how media depictions of cops as simply drones in the way of the goals of more fleshed-out characters, or worse, can serve to permeate the idea that those sworn to protect and serve are simply there to fuck up your day or your life, which isn't really the case.

It's a shame there isn't more out there like End of Watch, which is both a really good movie (imo), and depicts the heroism and sacrifice of police officers, but never attempts to advertise that such people are perfect, either. It comes across as real and respectful, rather than a PSA for cops that turns them into superheroes for people to roll their eyes at, and I think stuff like that is needed.

Having said that, I am planning on playing a lot of GTA once I install the games from the "Complete Pack" I bought, and I believe in the ability of mature audiences to separate fiction from reality. Still, that "mature" factor is a pretty important variable, and those in public service do deserve better than what they generally get from media.

My bad for the blog in a blog, but I'm going to bed, so no more rambling from me for a while. Always dig how Carlin's humor utilizes the English language and its usage.
