When it comes to games that require quick timing and precise reflexes, there is just something in the young child's mind that clicks with it. That and being willing to try again and again and again. Who's got time for that as an adult?
It's an interesting game to play as a historical curiosity. The NES version made it though.

I played Bionic Commando Rearmed, which is supposedly quite faithful to the NES game, and really enjoyed it. I'd love to play Rearmed 2.

I played Sonic CD a few years ago and man, doing that game the proper was is tough while sober! The mental image of you guys playing with Christmas lights is pretty funny though.
