What's up with LEGO's seeming lack of creativity over the last decade+? When I was a kid (cue old man voice) we didn't have LEGOs based on popular movies. LEGO put out original ideas and we were happy with them. Anyone else remember the Space Police, Spyrians, and Ice Planeters? My word, we had a bunch of those and loved them. We made our own stories and had our own heroes and villains. We had a big pirate ship (and we decided if they were from the Caribbean or not) that we repurposed many a time into an airship a la Final Fantasy VI. We weren't dependent on branding. But look at what they have today! Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, various Marvel and DC super heroes, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, the list goes on and on. Sure, LEGO does still make original stuff, like their City and Castle sets, but it all seems a little bland and uninspired compared with what they used to make...or maybe I'm just old and jaded and running on nostagia. Nah, that couldn't be it.

We've all had those times in live when everything happens at once. This last week was like that for me. Two main things ate up my time. First I got called in to work for overtime. The money is nice but it takes up an extra day lol. The other thing is that this week was my son's first birthday, so it was kind of a big deal. You old 1UP folks might remember when he was born last August. We had a Zelda-themed party, of course! And my sister-in-law made this awesome cake graphic (see below) for the cake my wife baked. It was delicious!

The Nightjar is an iOS audio adventure. That's right, it has no graphics whatsoever other than the interface pictured below (more on that in a minute). The story goes that you've been left behind on a failing space ship that is slowly falling into a collapsing star, though that's the least of your worries before the game is over. Your most immediate problem is the dark, of course. All you have to guide you to safety is the voice of a man you don't know (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock fame). Will you trust him?

After all the heavy FFVI music from the last couple weeks, I wanted to feature something light and fun and this remix fits the bill perfectly. Hailing from the fighting game BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, "Tao is Taokaka" is an exuberant electronica piece that plays it safe on the arrangement side but dang, if this doesn't make you feel happy just listening to it, there is something wrong with you. The beat is infectious and the whole thing is polished to a shine. At just 2'40" it won't take much of your time to listen to it, so give it chance...but I warn you, listening to it just once is hard.

The App Store is drowning in runners, so any new game in that genre needs to do something to stand out from the crowd. Knitted Deer does that with its aesthetic. It's like one of the dreaded Christmas sweaters come to life. I can't tell you anymore than what I've heard about it since I just downloaded it myself, but here's a review. Sounds like a good time waster and I'll try just about anything for free. The price dropped from 99 cents to free just this morning, and no telling how long it will last either. So give it a quick try before the developers change their minds. I bet you've never played a knitted game before!
