Well there wasn't much fooling around for Nintendo on the first. The latest Direct gsve me a nice glimmer of hope on upcoming titles that I thought I'd never see. But there was good and there was bad, so now I'll take a moment and dissect everything.
First thing is first...I'm back from my coma. Playing a marathon of terrible wii games will do that to you. Anyways Amiibo is the cash grab DLC monster I was afraid it would become. Splatoon amiibo, yarn yoshi amiibo, animal crossing amiibo cards, and in all it's paying off. People and collectors are eating them up. Unlock costumes, power ups, weapons, Nintendo is going full throttle on the DLC train. Take for instance Mewtwo...a $4 character...Lucas welll we aren't sure. You took what others did Nintendo and made it your own. May your money flow and have your profits, but I won't be suckered in. You took my money for Mario Kart 8 because I figured I owed you something for the free game so DLC on 16 new tracks and 10 new characters felt okay. I might even go for the $20 Hyrule Warriors pack that includes everything from TP, MM, and all sorts of goodies, but don't think for one second I'm going to spend money on costumes for Mii's in Smash Bros. I don't do dress up.
Out of left field announcements were fantastic. SMT X FE is happening, albeit with persona instead. This still is great though. On a console starved for games, let alone rpgs...this is fantastic news it's still coming. We all thought it was dead and were crying over it...now that it's coming be thankful. And Fatal Frame is coming stateside....holy crap was this unexpected. I was giddy when it was shown and gives me another glimmer of hope that Nintendo is listening....Finally. Now lets be sure we put the money down so they continue the trend. Oh and unrelated to the Direct, but still amazing is that NIS America is bringing Rodea: The Sky Soldier stateside. Much kudos and thanks are appreciated NIS, where would I be without those niche games you localize?
Indie is being embraced as the third party supplement. Since Nintendo is pretty much at bat alone, they are promoting the hell out of the indie game scene. And while it's not my thing, if you like indie games, the Wii U/ 3DS is where it's at.
I'm a bit disappointed at no Star Fox, Devil's Third, Xenoblade stuff. With Zelda being delayed to 2016 it looks as if they're trying to stretch the Wii U's life. In 2016 don't be surprised if at next years E3 they announce the NX launch date.
I'm not sure how the new 3DS will do, but I like the idea of a crossover rpg series with mario and whatever that other thing was, as well as the new fire emblem dynamic. the amiibo dlc talk was a bit disappointing. Make sure you buy that premium pass to see people's birthdays!
Finally I'm at 120% excitement for Mario Maker. Every instance I see a video just makes me love it more. That and the Smash poll. I'm not going to be like everyone else and vote for a vet to come back or even Ridley. I'm voting for either Rayman, Klonoa, or Bomberman...no matter how unlikely it is for them to get in. Or maybe I'll support Shantae.... Curses Nintendo!!!! And 200 cc is gonna be so infuriatingly fun! BRING IT ON!!!
